Living in Freedom

Climbing up a rickety ladder, I unlatched the trapdoor and made my way to the top of the two-story treehouse – just me and the branches. My wild braids blew, slapping my freckled sunburn. The sun twirled kaleidoscope designs on my overalls. Birds whistled and wisped past me – all modern sounds extinguished. I stretched out my legs and crossed my arms behind my head. Here I was at twelve, living life – splendidly free.

Although that tree fort is long gone, I am pleased to say I still own a sense of play, of freedom, of wonder. It is not limited to a playground. Just as love is not contained in a valentine’s box, or hospitality in a kitchen, so freedom is irrepressible. Real freedom – in the literal, definitive sense – is not limited to an age or circumstance. It is a lifetime blessing.

If it is really ours, why does it seem so distant?

True freedom is found only in Christ. If you are not walking with God, you will not find freedom, only artificial joy and artificial peace. By accepting Christ, we are finally able to the defeat guilt, worry, and fear that consumes our lives. For “wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Cor 3:17). Register: it is always accessible, always available.

No matter what heaviness inflicts you today, it does not have to conquer you – “you are now free in the Lord.” (1 Cor 7:22). It does not mean your problem is a mirage; it means you have the ability to conquer it: “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son,” (Col 1:13).

But suppose you do know Christ and have yet to inherit freedom.

There is a difference between accepting Christ and actually walking with Him. Jesus says, “If you love me, obey my commandments” (John 14:15). Does your life reflect how He tells us to live through His word? Chances are your freedom is on the other side of your obedience. If you want freedom bad enough – freedom from evil, freedom from darkness – you will give your life to Christ. We may mess up and forget God has offered us freedom, but “though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again.” (Prov 24:16). He helps us! We are never left to figure it out on our own.

As “Christ has truly set us free” we must make sure to “stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law.” (Gal 5:1). We are never expected to be perfect as that contradicts the fact that we are human, susceptible to sin. Rather, it is about striving to live like Christ, to live in Him. It is all about desire. Do you desire?
